Toothbrushes with the CDA Seal have had thorough quality control testing related to safety and cleaning effectiveness. Whether you buy a powered or a manual toothbrush, look for one that has earned the CDA Seal of Approval. Consider the following, as well:

  • The size of your toothbrush should include a handle long enough that you are able to hold it in your hand comfortably as your brush. The head of the toothbrush should be approximately one-half inch wide and one-inch tall. If a toothbrush head is too large, it can be very difficult to brush hard-to-reach areas, such as the backs and sides of molars.
  • The safest type of bristle for most people is a soft-bristled toothbrush, though it depends on the strength of your teeth and how vigorously you brush them. It’s possible to damage protective tooth enamel, the root surface, and the gums with medium-bristled and hard-bristled toothbrushes. Choose bristles with rounded tips, for maximum protection during brushing.

When to Replace a Toothbrush
